Description

Depart in the morning from either Taipei or Taichung and head to Miaoli, a region rich in cultural traditions, artistry, and scenic charm. As the bustling city fades behind you, the landscape transforms into rolling hills, lush valleys, and villages where history and craftsmanship still thrive. Begin at Nanzhuang Old Street, also called Guihua Lane, a nostalgic treasure in Miaoli. Walk along cobblestone streets lined with preserved wooden houses and red-brick shops that echo Taiwan’s past. Taste traditional Hakka snacks such as lei cha (pounded tea with grains and herbs), mochi, dried persimmons, and handmade rice cakes. Next, visit the Sanyi Wood Sculpture Museum, where artistry meets tradition. Sanyi is internationally recognized as Taiwan’s “Woodcarving Capital,” and this museum showcases why. The galleries feature an extensive collection of works—from delicate religious statues carved with astonishing detail, to modern wooden sculptures that reinterpret traditional motifs. Then, enjoy the Old Mountain Line Rail Bike experience. Pedal along the historic railway line, once essential for transporting goods through central Taiwan. Ride on tracks that wind through tunnels, across bridges, and alongside verdant hillsides. The ride is gentle and family-friendly, yet adventurous enough to make your heart race as you emerge from tunnels into sweeping panoramas of valleys and rivers. Finally, visit the Longteng Bridge (Dragon-Teng Bridge). Originally built in the early 20th century as a red-brick railway viaduct, the bridge was heavily damaged by the devastating earthquake of 1935 and later by the 1999 Jiji earthquake. Today, its surviving arches rise gracefully against the backdrop of hills and forests, overgrown with moss and vines that lend it a haunting beauty.
