Directions to Taroko Gorge
Taroko Gorge is truly one of the natural wonders of Asia. Located within the Taroko National Park at the junction of the old Su-hua (Hwy. No. 9) and Central Cross Island highways (Hwy. No. 8), it is a must-see destination outside of Taipei. There are numerous bus tours that can take you through this untouched wilderness. But take note that the buses from Hualien to Taroko can be crowded, especially at peak hours, on weekends or during holidays. Cars and scooters are also permitted into Taroko. We advise renting a scooter or driving, to quickly pass the crowded queues and make the most of your trip rather than experiencing the scenery in a mist of selfie-snapping tourists.
The gorge opens into a wide delta at the mouth of the Liwu River. Here you can take a hike up to the Eternal Spring Shrine to see a mesmerizing view of mountains and sea. The gorge widens and narrows as you travel down the winding, mountain road with the sparkling blue river below. You can see spectacular limestone, marble formations, caves, and waterfalls.
A one or two day visit to the Taroko Gorge is a perfect opportunity to experience the natural beauty of Taiwan. TAKE NOTE! The bridges and walkways into Taroko Gorge are regularly closed during bad weather, for safety reasons. We advice you to check the weather and call the Taroko tourist office ahead of time to make sure that you visit on a day when tourists are given full access to the National Park.
