Description

Explore landmarks that paved the way for Taiwan's LGBT movement and serve as critical symbols for the community’s fight for equal rights on a guided bus tour of Taipei. Visit the Red House Theater, 228 Peace Memorial Park, Treasure Hill Artist Village, GinGin Store, Ximending District, and more. Start the tour from “Rainbow Starting Line”, a pavement art piece in front of Taipei City Hall Square, also a significant landmark honoring the achievements of the LGBT community. Then, take a walk around Gongguan Shopping District and Shuiyuan Market. Notice how the market's geometric exterior looks like a rainbow on the waves of water, representing the city’s diversity and inclusivity. Next, stop for lunch (at your own expense), and continue to National Taiwan University where Taiwan’s first gay student club was established. Learn how the school is committed to the idea of gender diversity. Take a stroll around the Treasure Hill Artist Village, formerly a settlement of military veterans which has been transformed into art studios and exhibition spaces. See why it is lauded as one of Taipei’s must-see locations. Afterward, visit the GinGin Store, the first LGBT culture shop in Asia advocating gender equality. Check out their collection of literature, magazines, DVDs/CDs, apparel, adult toys, and even art exhibitions from LGBT artists and allies. The next highlight of the tour is the Rabbit God Temple, the only temple dedicated to Rabbit God, the deity of marriage and relationships for homosexual people. Whether you are single or taken, you can always pray to the Rabbit God for good luck. Move on to see some of the Taiwanese LGBT community’s popular hangout spots and creative spaces. Visit the 228 Peace Memorial Park, Taipei’s major gathering place for gay men in the past, and where the first Pride March in Taiwan was held. Pass by Ketagalan Boulevard, the gathering point of the Taiwan Pride Parade in October. Continue to Ximending Shopping District to see the iconic “Rainbow Six” a pavement art piece that symbolizes respect, equality, and diversity. End the tour right across the street in the Red House, Taipei's main gay district. Explore this outdoor complex featuring gay bars, shops, and restaurants. Behind the Red House is the Ximen Red House Outdoor Bar Area, where you can get a glimpse into gay nightlife and grab a drink.
