DescriptionDelve into the world of the sweet potato and help support a local program in Taipei. More than just a food, the sweet potato is part of Taiwanese culture, with cultural expressions about the vegetable and the theory that even the country is shaped like a sweet potato. Most of all, it is a popular street food snack - and that’s where you come in! Check out the sweet potato street food scene and meet the women, known as the 'Sweet Potato Mamas,' who cook and sell the snacks. Go to a warehouse at the heart of the Sweet Potato Mama industry and learn about the Sweet Potato Mama Program and the equipment the women use every day in their businesses. Learn about the Genesis Social Welfare Foundation, a well-known support organization in Taiwan that runs care facilities for underprivileged vegetative patients and operates community welfare initiatives. By providing the space, training, and equipment needed, the foundation helps Sweet Potato Mamas start their own businesses. The foundation also provides the first bag of sweet potatoes free of charge to help the business get going. Thanks to these necessities, the women can typically start their own business within a week. After your warehouse visit, join the Sweet Potato Mamas and see how they work, helping them sell sweet potatoes on the street. Between 12:00 and 13:00 is break time for the people who work in this area, but it’s peak hour for the Sweet Potato Mamas. Interact with all the locals who stop by, and chat with the Sweet Potato Mamas about their life. Once your shift is over, you’ll be treated to a sweet potato roasted by a Sweet Potato Mama herself!
